Vermilion County was established January 18, 1826,
and at one time covered a great deal of territory, reaching almost to
Kankakee and west to Peoria. At present, Vermilion County comprises
898 square miles.
Vermilion County is located approximately 2 hours
south of Chicago and Indianapolis is approximately 2 hours east.
According to the 2000 census, there are 83,300 residents in Vermilion
County.
Danville is the county seat. The
Vermilion County Courthouse (7 N. Vermilion) and Courthouse Annex (6 N.
Vermilion) are located on the corners of Vermilion and Main Street.
The County Board has 9 districts with three members
representing each district for a total of 27 board members. The
County Board Chairman is elected from the Board members.
The County boasts several scenic and wildlife areas.
Currently, there are 3 county parks: Forest Glen Preserve (5 miles
northeast of Georgetown), Kennekuk Cove (7 miles northwest of Danville)
and Lake Vermilion County Park.
In addition, there
are 3 state parks: Harry "Babe" Woodyard State Natural Area, Middle Fork
State Fish & Wildlife Area and the Kickapoo State Park.
